Art at the Beach

This summer, the kids requested to take an art class. This surprised me a bit, as all our days/nights in the summer are normally consumed by sports. They also wanted to take a little time off from golf and tennis, so that freed up our days. The Beach Museum on K-State's campus offers art classes for different age groups, and they have quite the variety of days/times. We chose a class meant for ages 6 & up, so both kids could take the same class. The Carson kids are taking it as well. The theme this year revolves around space, the moon, our solar system, etc. We've had 2 classes so far, and it seemed as though the kids really enjoyed them. At their first class, they were asked to make a spaceship or rocket out of recyclable materials. Chloe and Makena worked together to make one from lotion and body wash bottles. Luke and Landon each made one out of paper plates. The second week, they each made their own solar system mobile. They shaved 3 crayons- they chose the colors. Then they used those shavings and melted them inside wax paper with an iron. Once the wax paper sealed shut with the heat, they cut different sized circles out of that, and shared their paper with others so they could each have different colored planets of all sizes. They hung them from some pipe cleaners with string. They turned out pretty cool. They all are surely flexing those creative imaginations. I can't wait to see what the next few weeks brings out in them!
