Pioneer Concert

On Thursday, all the 1st graders at Makena's school hosted a Pioneer Concert, to teach all of us family members about Pioneer days and the State of Kansas. They have worked on a HUGE unit in school, revolving around this. They even had some parent volunteers come in over the last couple of weeks to sew bonnets, aprons and handkerchiefs to wear as part of their "costumes."It's especially important for them to learn about because the namesake for their school was a Pioneer. In fact, a portion of Makena's speaking part in the program was that "Amanda Arnold was one of the first settlers in Manhattan and was the first paid teacher in Manhattan." It was a very cute program, full of songs, dances and lots of speaking parts. All of the kids participated in several ways. It was an emotional night for the teachers, as the music teacher is retiring after this year, so this was her last Pioneer Concert. In all, it was a memorable night, and a fun way to meet more of Makena's friends and classmates.
